SPRINGFIELD (AP) — A group of Illinois state lawmakers say they’re working to find resources to help more than 2,000 Granite City workers who will be laid off from U.S. Steel.
The (Alton) Telegraph reports the lawmakers are hoping to find job search and placement assistance, support programs and other transition services for the 2,080 workers. U.S. Steel said last month that it would temporarily close its steel plant in Granite City.
The group includes Democratic state Rep. Jay Hoffman of Swansea, Democratic state Sen. Bill Haine of Alton and Democratic state Rep. Dan Beiser of Alton. They say they’re working with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity other state agencies.
Hoffman called the closure “devastating to the community.”
