JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 2-day trial in Jefferson County Court resulted in a guilty verdict Thursday against a 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man, just minutes after the jury was handed the felony drug case for deliberation.

According to State’s Attorney Douglas R. Hoffman, Fernandus D. Jones was found guilty of Class 1 felony unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 Feet of a park.

On September 10, 2014, Jones sold a quantity of heroin near Mt. Vernon Veteran’s Park. The sale was made to a confidential source who was working with the Mt. Vernon Police/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Joint Narcotics Division.

Jones, who was represented by a public defender, faces a possible sentence of between 4 and 15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He is not eligible for probation.

Following the verdict, bond for Jones was revoked. He will remain in jail pending his sentencing on December 14th.

The trial began on Tuesday and the jury began deliberations at approximately 4:08 PM on Thursday–returning a verdict approximately 5 minutes later.
