JEFFERSON COUNTY — A fatal accident early Saturday morning in Jefferson County remains under investigation.

According to police reports, at approximately 3:10 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a report of a vehicle that had struck a tree off the side of Opdyke Lane, near the intersection of Lynchberg Road.

Both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle. The driver has been identified as 22-year-old Lucas D. Johnson, of McLeansboro, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson’s passenger, 21-year-old Kalie N. Montgomery, 21, of Carterville, was airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown.

Jefferson County Sheriffs Office, Jefferson Fire Protection District, Litton’ s Ambulance, Air Evac and Jefferson County Coroner personnel responded to the scene.

The sheriff’s office and coroner’s office continue to investigate the incident.
