MARION COUNTY — The Marion County Coroner has again stirred controversy over something he posted on his Facebook page, this time for suggesting the recently named vice-presidential running-mate was a “hoe.”

Troy Cannon on Wednesday shared a meme on Facebook showing a fake campaign logo for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that said “Joe and the Hoe.”

While many of Cannon’s followers liked the meme, a few others found it offensive and still, others who shared it in screenshots from his post complained about such a message being shared by an elected official.

One person commenting on Cannon’s page is a local police officer who said his eight-year-old daughter saw the post on his phone and asked why he had Cannon as a friend, and that he shouldn’t be friends with someone who talks like that because she has a mother. “If an eight-year-old gets it,” commented the officer, “you should get it.”

The officer further commented that law enforcement officers from across Marion County were messaging and calling him saying they agree with him and that they are disgusted and embarrassed by Cannon’s post.

This isn’t the first time Cannon has suffered backlash from his Facebook activity. In 2017 a post he shared regarding Muslims created controversy and resulted in an outcry from not only local posters but from the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Chicago.

Nick Heath, his opponent in the November election commented to Cannon’s post by saying that while he supports the First Amendment’s guarantee of Free Speech, he feels that elected officials are held to a higher standard and that if you can’t hold yourself to that higher standard you probably shouldn’t run for office,

Calls to Cannon’s phone went to voicemail, which was full and couldn’t take messages. He did later respond via text message but when told the reason for the call was for comment on his post, he did not respond.
