BENTON — A Benton man has been identified as the motorcyclist injured this week when a hit-and-run driver pushed him under a moving train in Mt. Vernon Monday night.
John Ferris was leaving work at Continental Tire at 1 a.m., and as he was waiting at a Shawnee Road rail crossing, an unidentified black Chevy Cavalier pulled up behind him and pushed his motorcycle with him on it under a moving train.
Ferris was sent to St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri after initially being taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon following the incident.
Ferris’ right leg was broken in the event and his knee was shattered. He’s undergone his first surgery to straighten his leg with pins and rods, but will need additional surgeries to repair his injuries, and time to heal extensive internal bruising.
It’s expected Ferris will have to be off work for 3 to 4 months. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help John, his wife and their 3-year-old daughter with medical bills, rehab, food, and other expenses.
