FRANKLIN COUNTY — Authorities say they have arrested the 17-year-old driver of a vehicle involved in a crash Saturday night in Franklin County that claimed the life of an Opdyke teen.
Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says the crash happened around 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of Akin Blacktop and Bessie Road.
Four male juveniles were traveling at a high rate of speed in a pickup truck on Bessie Road failing to stop at a stop sign and passing through the intersection with Akin Blacktop.
The truck continued through the front yard of a home striking a tree and continuing through a modular home rolling over and coming to rest on its top. The driver and two passengers then fled the scene on foot.
A body of the third passenger, 17-year-old Isaiah Mikail Snowden of Opdyke, was not discovered until authorities were preparing to have the vehicle, which was on its top, towed from the scene of the accident.
The 17-year-old driver of the vehicle, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, was arrested on charges related to the fatal crash, and is being held at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center, Jones said.
Jones said the driver, who was found early Sunday morning walking nearby, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, underage drinking and driving under the influence.
The DUI charge may be enhanced to aggravated DUI, Jones said. The other teenagers in the truck, one 17 and one 18, who police said fled the scene with the driver may also be charged, Jones said, as well as potentially others who were not involved in the wreck but may have contributed to the situation.
The other two occupants suffered non life-threatening injuries and have been located, Jones said.
The sheriff says the crash was speed and alcohol related. The crash is under investigation. Further arrests and charges are anticipated.
